About the Developer and Author

H. Dieter Heinz, Analytical Research Chemist, developed in the 1960s simple test methods now recognized as standards, to determine the hazards of Unknown spilled solid & liquid chemicals.

His 5-step Method provides the necessary information to select proper protective clothing and monitoring equipment to safely mitigate a hazardous materials incident. Dieter is continually updating his method to make it easier and better for today's world.

The identification of unknown solid and liquid chemicals in the field is very important to the Safety of the Responders and the Environment!

HazMat Responders from the Federal, State & Local level will be able to quickly test for the following:

  • Explosives
  • Flammable & Combustible Liquids
  • Flammable Solids
  • Oxidizers
  • Corrosives
  • Cyanides in Ionic compounds
  • Sulfides in Ionic compounds
  • Chlorinated Hydrocarbons
  • And many others

When dealing with solids, the following properties must be known:

  • Thermal Stability
  • Water Behavior
  • pH

When dealing with liquids, the following are the backbone for analysis:

  • Volatility
  • Potential Explosion Hazards
  • Oxidizers
  • Corrosiveness
  • Water behavior
  • Water reactivity
  • Reducing Agents
